Jahan Ara

Agra. The Taj Mahal is rising from grief, and the empire’s fate rests in the hands of a daughter.

When Mumtaz Mahal dies, her eldest child, Jahanara, steps into her place, keeper of the harem, the treasury and her heartbroken father, Shah Jahan, as he slips into opium and memory.

But behind the marble screens, ambition is stirring.

Her sister Roshanara forges letters to ruin her. Her brother Aurangzeb is quietly arming for the throne. And the man she loves, a Rajput king, is riding towards a war that will tear her family apart.

Scarred by fire and bound by duty, Jahanara must stand be-tween the brothers she loves, the father she shields and the truth only she dares to write down, even as history prepares to erase her name.

Told in Jahanara’s own voice, this book is a lush, heartbreaking novel of love, betrayal and sisterhood in the shadow of the world’s most famous monument. It is the story of a Mughal princess who held an empire together, and asked only for grass upon her grave.
